About the work

She had carried that padlock in her apron pocket for weeks, after finding it half-buried in the soil when turning over the garden patch. It was stubborn, rusted shut, and she’d tried everything: oil, vinegar, even a mallet. Now, under the fluorescent hum, the cool brass felt different through the thin gloves. She was searching for a key, a very specific key, though she knew the odds were zero in a million. The old man behind the counter had just shaken his head, but she still felt for something that would fit. It was a lock with nothing to unlock, a seal on a lost secret. The pigeon outside the window, however, didn’t seem to care.
