Subway Car with a Faint Rictus — abstract work by Stefan Tannhäuser — MODULAR · 13 × 18 cm limited edition of 10

About the work

Sometimes you can feel the pressure of something else happening. Not directly to you, but around you, a shift in the air, a kind of internal echo of a different life. It’s like the hum of a distant electrical box, unnoticed until it stops. Or the brief, almost imperceptible lurch of a train car as it begins to move, even when you aren't inside. There is an enormous amount of force involved in all the little movements of the world, and most of it is simply absorbed, rendered invisible by the sheer, unending volume of it all. But then sometimes, you catch a glimpse of the mechanism, the way a small piece of something is just managing to hold itself together, perhaps for one more moment, before dissolving back into the general undifferentiated push and pull.
