cedar & magenta sorting — abstract work by Viktor Eklund — MODULAR · 13 × 18 cm limited edition of 10

About the work

The scent of cedar and beeswax, issuing from the giant pawn, suggests a hidden craft within the industrial hum, a counterpoint to the synthetic yellow squares being sorted. These squares are identical, demanding precision, yet the pawn stands as a singular, handcrafted form, a decision made, a piece considered. It is a moment of deliberate slowness, perhaps, a pause in the relentless pace of repetition, or an object placed there as a marker. What kind of game uses such a piece, in such a corridor, among such tasks? It might be that the scale is the only thing that differentiates it from the small, domestic objects we carry in our pockets, chosen not for use but for a private significance. The wood itself, with its faint fragrance, reminds one that even within the manufactured world, something elemental persists, something that outlasts the temporary arrangement of fabric and light.
