About the work
The mascot watches the end of it all, or the quiet after. It is always the same mask, the same fixed grin, no matter what happens, no matter the fading light, the cold, the tired instruments. There’s a particular ache in the body when something is finished, especially something joyful, and it is a different kind of ache than the one that came before. It’s an ache that remembers the joy and now holds its absence. What a strange thing, to be the one who observes this afterglow, encased in something perpetually cheerful, a permanent public face. To be joyful and alone, or to be lonely and joyful. The mask is always present, but it contains a shifting interior.
