About the work

The sofa’s texture is almost painfully familiar, the kind of deep, soft boucle that promises a world beyond its own immediate function. It holds the reflected digital rectangle of a screen, which in turn holds a face, slightly blurred, absorbed. Here, the landscape of the storm outside is merely a backdrop, a vast indifference against the precise, glowing rectangle of attention. It makes me wonder about the scale of our inner worlds, how a single human face, caught in the light of a phone, can eclipse the raw immensity of an approaching storm. There is a kind of gentle violence in this turning away, a deliberate narrowing of focus from the sublime to the intimately trivial. The face is content, perhaps, or simply occupied, unaware of the world building outside itself, or, perhaps, deliberately unconcerned.
