About the work

The woman on the right, still holding the deck of cards like a fan, knows the secret to the floating table. She knows it better than anyone, having helped engineer it, having spent weeks in the garage with a drill and a welder. It took three trips to the hardware store for the right gauge of wire, and another two to find paint that would perfectly match the skirting boards. None of this work is visible, of course, from this angle. The camera, if it were capable of appreciation, would only see the stillness of the illusion, the quiet weightlessness. What it would not see, cannot see, is the faint scar on her palm where a drill bit slipped.
