That pigeon has a story, too. It’s not just a pigeon in the street; it’s the third party, the silent witness that sees the things we’re too polite to show. Perhaps it’s a veteran of curbside dramas, a connoisseur of human awkwardness, or simply a creature drawn to the spill of cereal. The way it cranes its neck, the intense focus, suggests a deep understanding of gravity, of crumbs. It has seen people pack up their lives, unfold their lives, and try to make sense of new technologies in the open air. What it can’t explain is why they’re learning to listen to a tiny human, right here, right now, as if the house they came from has already forgotten them.
