Gathering Timber at Twelve-Thirty — photograph by Parisa Khavari — MODULAR · 13 × 18 cm limited edition of 10

About the work

The work of gathering timber is always a negotiation with what the sea has relinquished, but here, in this narrow window of receding tide and faint moonlight, it feels like an act of pure faith. The figure bends, selecting not just any piece, but *this* one, dark against the damp sand, chosen from a bounty that will be swallowed again in mere hours. There’s a quiet courage in believing that what is gathered under such ephemeral conditions will serve a purpose, will become fire or shelter. It suggests that some needs are so fundamental they compel us to act even when the world itself seems to be withdrawing into shadow. The sliver of moon offers just enough light to see the immediate task, but not enough to foresee the outcome, leaving the intention itself as the most substantial thing in the frame.
