About the work
The mug was a gift. It was supposed to be a joke, a reference to a long-forgotten sitcom, but it quickly became an everyday thing. Now it holds the spoon that they found stuck to the bottom of their shoe one morning, the morning after the night the car broke down for good. The spoon is taped there, a makeshift handle for a mug whose original one snapped off years ago. They hold it like it might shatter again, even though it has already survived worse. This particular mug, with this particular spoon, has always had this quality of being about to spill.
